Rare Breed Saddleback Pigs

Abacus (Colour Printers) Ltd is situated in the farming district of the Lake District National Park. It is a family business run by John and Margaret Sutcliffe. Not only do they run a print works but John farms rare breed pigs and sheep and Margaret has horses. Just for this story I will talk about the pigs.

Rarebreed Saddleback pigs. John's herd - The Coal Yeat Pedigree Saddleback Pig Herd. John has approximately 250 pigs at various ages and sizes on the farm. He has been awarded Saddleback Champion at various local shows in and around our area and at county shows up and down the country. John enjoys showing his pigs and marketing the breed, however a prime objective of his breeding programme is to produce the tastiest pork. He sends his pigs to Aireys Butchers a family business where a small abbatoir is attached to the farm shop. This is just a few miles from Abacus so there are no long distances for the pigs to travel, ensuring happy stress free animals. So if you are interested in giving it a try: www.aireysfarmshop.co.uk - I have tried it and can definitely recommend John's pork.

John’s Saddleback pigs spend late spring, summer and most of autumn outside. Winter is wet and cold in this part of the country so the pigs spend it in Dutch barns and yards with plenty of space and fresh air. The pigs love being turned out into their grassy paddocks for the rest of the year. John has a holistic approach to his pigs where prevention is better than cure, and the entire herd is very healthy and happy.
